About Mann’s quotation. It sounds contradictory in translation, but isn’t in the original, because there’s only one German term for solitude and loneliness.
It does at that. Einsamkeit translates literally to being alone. English splits them up. I had not considered that. Yet, the contradiction makes it effective as well.
