“Hark, now hear the sailors cry, Smell the sea, and feel the sky, Let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic.” – Van Morrison During the days I spend sitting on the shores in Cozumel this past January, one thing that was every present, except one stormy day, was the non-stop traffic of boats going by, just offshore. It was a mix of dive boats, fishing boats, and pleasure craft, but… Read More
“We sat together silently in the tropical warmth of the beach, gazing over the calm waters and watching the sun slip closer to the horizon, marking the end of another day in brilliant splendour” – Ed Lehming I know, I’m mixing winter images with summer-like scenes but can’t help but be drawn back to this time spent in Cozumel with friends and family. Every day more relaxing than the previous one. The… Read More
“The waves lapped lazily on tropical shores, warm and gentle breezes caressed the palms. My very soul is refreshed by the peace of the day.” – Ed Lehming This image is in stark contrast to my recent Iceland series. I had not considered that I might be in the tropics mere months after my northern adventures. Both experiences have been incredibly refreshing, in completely different ways. The warm breezes and lush growth… Read More
“It was dusk and the light had an ultra-violet quality to it, a final burst of pigmentation as night and day rushed at each other in a clash of colour prisms before darkness finally, inevitably won out.” ― Karen Swan Though much of our trip was filled with the overcast, misty, and often gloomy light of autumn, we were, on this occasion greeted with the magnificent colours of an Icelandic sunset. On our… Read More
“Hvammsfjörður” – Western Iceland “Those who live by the sea can hardly form a single thought of which the sea would not be part.” ― Hermann Broch There was a slight delay in my posts over the past few days. You see, for the last 2 days of my ten day Iceland trip, I was sick with some sort of gastro-intestinal infection. I have no idea where it came from. It felt like… Read More
“I spent uncounted hours sitting at the bow looking at the water and the sky, studying each wave, different from the last, seeing how it caught the light, the air, the wind; watching patterns, the sweep of it all, and letting it take me. The sea.” ― Gary Paulsen As in the quote I selected, I spent a lot of time sitting on the shore, filling my lungs with the wonderful smell of… Read More
“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.” ― Sarah Kay After a sustained hiatus, I’m going to start back into my blogging with an image that is an escape from the cold, slow filled winter we have experienced this year. Mostly because this winter has offered me little material that I have felt inspired by and… Read More
“Silence” “The sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, and weeps. It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles. No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can’t.” ― Christopher Paolini I find myself constantly going back to my time with the whales of the Baja. It was a deeply emotional time. As the associated quote states so well, there are so many… Read More
“Every now and then one paints a picture that seems to have opened a door and serves as a stepping stone to other things.” ― Pablo Picasso Though this is my photo blog I have, recently, posted a few paintings. Actually, they are photos of paintings, so I’m really not crossing a line, am I? As those of you who follow this blog regularly would know, I’ve commented in the past about… Read More
“We must believe that there are places where tranquility exists and nature is given back her power to speak…” ― Nanette L. Avery Seriously, I am trying to move away from whales, and the ocean, but the draw is too strong. I’m still going through the many photos I made on my recent vacation and finding images that simply resonate with me. The image above of one such photo. Made around eight… Read More
“I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists… Read More
“The sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, and weeps. It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles. No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can’t.” ― Christopher Paolini I’m noticing that all my titles have become single words. That’s partially because I’m struggling to find suitable words to describe this experience fully, so it’s coming in snippets. This image is… Read More
“There are in life a few moments so beautiful, that even words are a sort of profanity.” ― Diana Palmer I made this image last week, while out whale watching off the Pacific coast of Baja. I’ve seen many images of Humpback Whales but never thought I’d witness these majestic animals in the wild. The day started out with sightings of several Grey Whales, which surfaced around us, blowing spouts of air as they surfaced… Read More
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love—then make that day count!” ― Steve Maraboli “Land’s End” – Cabo San Lucas A brief post today from this beautiful place. I made the photo as we were pulling out of the harbour to do some diving along the coast. It was a good time for the photo,… Read More
“So slip on your goggles and your reading trunks, for the sun is high. Let me leave you with one more thought. In what season of the year do we find ourselves – I’m speaking for a moment in terms of the physical world – wading through things? Surf. Kelp. Books. Summer.” ― Roy Blount Jr. This photo is not my usual style, but I love water, moving water, and I especially love… Read More
A nice view of Monterey Harbour. The tide was low, revealing rocks clearly. The lupine and rocks helped frame the shot nicely, and the sky was a wonderful mix of clouds and turquoise.
