“No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit.”  ― Ansel Adams As those who follow my posts regularly, you will know that I enjoy testing new things. There is great satisfaction in this creative process, of communicating in a slightly different way than traditional photography. Though,… Read More

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”  ― Martha Graham Welcome to the spruce bog. Though it may not sound exotic, the light and imagery that I experienced on this… Read More

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”  ― Terry Pratchett Exiting the forest proper, I’m on the edge of a thin poplar stand, the path turns to one side and I’m faced… Read More

“The only way to live is by accepting each minute as an unrepeatable miracle.”  ― Jack Kornfield A simple title for a wondrous scene. One of innumerable scenes like it, along the way. Yes, it’s just a few simple trees, but the light reflecting from the leaves was stunning. The slight breeze wove between the branches and the whole scene was alive. There so many time when mere words simply cannot express the… Read More

“Art doesn’t give rise to anything in us that isn’t already there. It simply stirs our curious consciousness and sparks a fire that illuminates who we have always wanted to be.”  ― Kamand Kojouri Deeper into the woods the path winds, the canopy ablaze with brightness and surreal colour. Ahead, a wall of shimmering orange and yellow, like ethereal flames, dances in the breeze, amidst dark tree trunks, filling my eyes with the… Read More

“Hidden in the glorious wildness like unmined gold.” – John Muir Here we are, the end of October nearly upon us, and I’m out hiking in a tee shirt and shorts. The past few weeks have been so incredibly mild that it’s hard to believe it’s autumn. Yet, the leaves evidence that the natural cycles continue. I have many photos from the past few weekends to review and post in a series that… Read More

“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. “ – Tecumseh The inevitability of trees, and all life on earth, is that they eventually fall, through age, disease, or human intervention. The latter is the case in this image…. Read More

“I’ve always believed there are moments in our lives which can be defined as a transition between the before and after, between the cause and the effect.”  ― Benjamin X. Wretlind Along the trail, the trees thin in places, a transition from forest to glade. More light enters along this transition zone, creating an ideal environment for new growth. Composting leaves and thin ground cover allow the sun’s light to warm the ground… Read More

“The voice of beauty speaks softly; it creeps only into the most fully awakened souls”  ― Friedrich Nietzsche Bright rays of sun reflects off the tree lined hillside within the Durham Forest. Patches of light shine in golds and silvers, lighting up patches of leaf littered ground and pockets of bright green undergrowth. I found some areas of the forest strangely devoid of undergrowth this year, which struck me as odd during… Read More

“There are no dead ends in life’s journey; there are no crossroads, no forks in the road. People who chose not to see reality, see the world as a tangled maze of intersections, forks in the road, and dead ends. These are illusions of people who follow the well trampled wide path woven out by others. This is not their true path. Life’s true sojourn reveals a long winding narrow path that… Read More

“You are the light in a dark place. You are the water to my drought. You are everything I never knew existed and everything I wanted all at the same time.”  ― Shelly Crane The next image in my “Into the Green Veil” series is of a large maple tree which stood along the trail, roots spreading deeply into the forest floor. Further into the forest, slightly smaller maples catch golden rays of… Read More

“The Green Veil shimmers richly around me, in tones of deepest emerald and muted olive; a dominating threshold between earth and sky. Yet, through this veil,  gold light pierces and shimmers, lighting the path and bright undergrowth, in a dance of life and light.” – Ed Lehming I’ve been wanting to create a new series of images for some time, but the greens of summer, while lovely and filled with life, do… Read More

“Among the tales of sorrow and of ruin that came down to us from the darkness of those days there are yet some in which amid weeping there is joy and under the shadow of death light that endures.  ― J.R.R. Tolkien Over the past few days, I’ve been deliberately spending my lunches in the local forests, reconnecting with the wood and getting back to my love of photo-abstractions. Summer posses a unique… Read More

A beautiful, cool dawn on Bancroft’s Marble Lake. The mist swirls gently on the water’s surface, as the sun rises behind a low ridge.   A pattern repeated throughout the summer, each time, slightly different. In the distance, Blue Jays screech high in the trees and the world awakens as the sunlight reaches further every minute. A new day begins.

“For a while” is a phrase whose length can’t be measured. At least by the person who’s waiting.”  ― Haruki Murakami  When composing this image, my eyes were first drawn to the warm and cool layers of light on the water as well as the texture of the water itself, the first caused by patchy clouds and the second, by high winds blowing off Lake Huron. The seagull, seems quite at peace i… Read More

“There was no sudden, striking, and emotional transition. Like the warming of a room or the coming of daylight. When you first notice them they have already been going on for some time.”  ― C.S. Lewis  While enjoying one of several sunsets last weekend, I could not help but be fascinated by the light playing on the sand at my feet. The sun reflecting from the sand glowed a coppery orange yet the… Read More

“Spring dances with joy in every flower and in every bud letting us know that changes are beautiful and an inevitable law of life.” ― Debasish Mridha And the flowers keep blooming. Every day more colours, more varieties, right from the garden or in the woods. It’s so nice be able to have this variety available and to be able to create good photos of them. As I’ve said previously, we tend… Read More

“I am so grateful to be here on this awesome planet with its diverse life – everything we need to not just survive but to thrive. I am excited to continually learn more about it, and always curious to see what is going to come up next.” ― Jay Woodman While photographing the Lake Ontario shore line recently, one of the thousands of Canada Geese floating offshore decided to give me a closer… Read More

“By March, the worst of the winter would be over. The snow would thaw, the rivers begin to run and the world would wake into itself again. Not that year. Winter hung in there, like an invalid refusing to die. Day after grey day the ice stayed hard; the world remained unfriendly and cold.” ― Neil Gaiman February has been an odd one here on Southern Ontario. After the snows of December,… Read More

Here is my entry for Del Monte Y Mar’s Tuesdays of Texture Challenge Week 7 of 2017, Valentine’s Edition. With all the floral photos I’ve been posting lately, this one does not seem that much different, except the carnation has beautiful texture in its ruffled petals. So, I decide to combine Valentine’s and texture in one photo. I hope you enjoy it. Nikon D800 Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 (272ENII)@90mm 1.6sec,… Read More

“In the end there is only light and dark. And the two are not so far apart.” ― Thomas Lloyd Qualls Yesterday it was the roses putting on their show, today, a single lily decided to open fully. Until that point, I had no idea what colour it might be, other than something pale. This one, as you can see from the photo is white with a pinky-cream tone and even some… Read More

“As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness”  ― Laura Ingalls Wilder Back in the studio today, with a fresh bouquet. This time creamy roses, red carnations, spider dahlias, and lilies, which have not opened… Read More

“Silence can always be broken by the sound Of footsteps walking over frozen ground In winter when the melancholy trees Stand abject and let their branches freeze
” ― Merrill Moore So typical of the past week, this cedar bough, coated with a glass-like film of ice, the result of an evening of freezing rain and a gradual morning thaw. What drew me to this composition was the warm morning light and delicate… Read More

“This life is yours. Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well. Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly. Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature. Take the power to control your own life. No one else can do it for you. Take the power to make your life happy.” ― Susan… Read More

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” ― Albert Einstein There is something magical about ice, by times. During this past week’s thaw and freezing, some interesting effects were… Read More

“Solitude gives birth to the original in us, to beauty unfamiliar and perilous – to poetry. But also, it gives birth to the opposite: to the perverse, the illicit, the absurd.” ― Thomas Mann Nikon D800 Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 (272ENII)@90mm 1/125 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100 For more images like this, please visit my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EdLehming or my website (some images available for purchase) http://www.edlehming.com

“Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. At the edge of perception, weird things dance and howl.” ― M.H. Boroson Every now and then, a photo surprises me. For those of you who are photographers and take interest in my camera settings, which I post with most of my photos, you will have noticed that the studio florals do not vary a whole lot. I will tweak aperture if I want… Read More

I’ve had a few people ask recently how I’m able to pick up the golden glow in some of my forest images. One of my recent images, “November’s Golden Litter” – Hermon, Ontario, is an example of their fabulous effect on a large scale. When conditions are just right: the right light, the angel of that light, the condition and colour of the leaves, and a contrasting background, the effect is almost magical. If you… Read More
