“Largo de Santa Cruz do Castelo” – Lisboa

On a corner of, Largo de Santa Cruz do Castelo, as the sign says, just below the Castelo de São Jorge, sits this weathered building that caught my eye. I love these weathered buildings. The longer I sit and observe, the more details emerge.
At first glance, it’s a weathered façade. On closer inspection, it’s a story revealed in layers: a rust-stained drainpipe traces decades of rain, wild plants root themselves in cracked cornices, empty flower pots wait on a fragile balcony, and three pigeons, not immediately visible, survey it all from above. Faded street signage, exposed wiring, peeling plaster, and mismatched repairs reveal a building quietly recording time, one detail at a time. It’s one of hundreds like this in Lisbon, and each one has its own story.
I also consider that this square is extremely busy with large crowds of people arriving at and leaving the historic castle just steps away. I wonder how many others ponder these old façades and how many just pass them by without a second thought?

…and the open electrical junction box looks exposed.
Yes, it seems pretty common here.
Europe is full of shabby chic, which looks just right there, but wouldn’t look good here in the States.
