I love the hidden stories of the city, the mystery of the abandoned. This building, in a busy square sits abandoned while its neighbours are clearly occupied and modern. There are stories here of lives lived and day-to-day routines. I think of these doors opening at the start of the day, children laughing and playing, neighbours chatting, now silent. Many years ago, just north of Pickering, Ontario, was a flourishing hamlet called Altona. There was a school, a couple of churches, a hotel and many beautiful farms, as well as a mill.
